I am often asked be members of the public what is the size of the motel industry in New Zealand. The Motel Association of New Zealand has currently 950 members covering 65% of the industry. The figures below are a generalization as so many variable aspects come into effect as location, presentation, the market being aimed for etc. Motelling is an ideal industry for couples who wish to work together.
- A motel may cost anywhere between $350,000 for a small 10 units or fewer to $1.5 million for a motel with upwards of 50 units depending on location & presentation.
- Annual revenue is typically $300,000 - $650,000 although the bigger motels will earn considerably more.
